The Story: Kendry Morales made his spring debut yesterday.  The Monkey Says: K-Mo had two run-scoring hits and helped the Angels win their first game of Spring Training.  Hmmm, Kendry returns and the Angels win for the first time, that can’t be a coincidence. The Story: The Angels reunited with Vladimir Guerrero for the first time yesterday.  The Monkey Says: It isn’t like I didn’t know that Vlad signed with Texas, but it really cut me deep to see Guerrero wearing a Texas Ranger uniform. The Story: Kevin Jepsen, Scot Shields and Scott Kazmir will all pitch simulated games this week.  The Monkey Says: I’ve always wanted to see a simulated game.  I’ve always imagined that it was like one of the simulations in the Danger Room of Professor Xavier’s mansion.  Or maybe I just need to stop reading comic books.  Oh yeah, this is good news as all three have been slowed by injuries early in camp. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to determine the binding affinities between the hormone 17-estradiol (E2) and different estrogen receptor (ER) isoforms in the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Previous phylogenetic analysis indicates that a whole genome duplication prior to the divergence of ray-finned fish led to two distinct ER isoforms, ER and ER, and the recent whole genome duplication in the ancestral salmonid created two ER isoforms, ER and ER. The objective of our computational studies is to provide insight into the underlying evolutionary pressures on these isoforms. For the ER subtype our results show that E2 binds preferentially to ER over ER. Tests of lineage specific N/S ratios indicate that the ligand binding domain of the ER gene is evolving under relaxed selection relative to all other ER genes. Comparison with the highly conserved DNA binding domain suggests that ER may be undergoing neofunctionalization possibly by binding to another ligand. By contrast, bot

I went to a show last week. The artists on the bill were all electronic musicians. The crowd was thick, the glasses were thicker and it was impossible to see any part of what these musicians were doing. One artist in particular was called Daedelus. The man was part magician, part robot, part living ,breathing interface. But I could only patch together glimpses of him. I would see an elbow sweep, fingers depressing lighted squares and eyes darting back and forth between devices....devices that I'd never seen before.  Well, there were laptops  housing the sounds, loops, glitches and samples..but the devices were in control...... Author Summary Amyloid diseases are characterized by the presence of amyloid fibrils on organs and tissue in the body. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's diseases and Type II Diabetes are all examples of amyloid diseases. Determining the structure of amyloid fibrils is critical for understanding the mechanism of fibril formation as well as for the design of inhibitor molecules that can prevent aggregation. In the case of the Alzheimer Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide, the structure of fibrils grown under conditions of mechanical agitation has been elucidated from a combination of simulation and experiments. However, the structures of the asymmetric quiescent Aβ fibrils (grown under conditions akin to physiological conditions) and of Alzheimer's brain–derived fibrils are not known.
